Hey /sorc/ I have a question for you. Actually two questions. First, I'm a Dragonlancefag and have read most of the Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman Dragonlance books. I'm particularly impressed by characters like Fizban, Raistlin, Par Salian and Dalamar in those books because of their magical abilities even though Fizban is really Paladine. Can someone please draw a general comparison between Dragonlance magic and any magic practiced on Earth?

Secondly, I've read a bit on the field of Psionics and people claim to use the machines to amplify their powers and I'm wondering if anyone here has tried it. If so, stories would be greatly appreciated.

Without any more details, I can't give you any comparison with real life practice of magic.

Well, for example, they have three moons in the sky that they can draw power from - a white for good, red for neutral and a black for evil. When the moons aren't out the magic users can still cast like normal. For casting, they have to learn specific words a specific way with certain hand motions. When they're learning spells, if they don't get it exactly right the spell won't make any sense to them. They can also have scrolls they can create to auto-cast spells and objects for certain things. For spell range, they have everything from necromancy to geomancy to meteromancy.

Let me know if you want anything else.

And as for Psionics, it's more or less using machines to amplify the radio frequencies of a human brain to do things on a molecular level like in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". The machines are like the rings they wear. There are also some who have more practice and can do things without the aid of a machine.

For more details, please read "The Black Box and Other Psychic Generators". For everyone who'll say tl;dr, please read the "Prolog" and "The Beginning", linked below.

It seems to me a bit like a simplification of things people do now, or at least in some ways, for the purposes of telling a story.

I was especially struck by the idea of three moons; as far as I understood, magic practised here is neither good nor evil. Those are only labels to clarify the intent of the user. So I guess there's that. It's like making a visual representation of the choice magic workers here have into something a reader could more easily identify with.
