Raises interesting questions:

"an unidentified creature that washed ashore dead, on a beach near the business district of Montauk, New York in July 2008. The identity of the creature, and the veracity of stories surrounding it, have been the subject of unresolved controversy and speculation. It is unknown what happened to the carcass. Although the creature's body was never reported as recovered or physically examined, palaeozoologist Darren Naish studied the photograph and concluded from visible dentition and the front paws that the creature was a raccoon, with it's odd appearance merely a byproduct of decomposition and water action removing most of the animals hair and some of it's flesh."

Ooh. LOST ARG. Cool. (LOST is awesome)
I believe that the best explanation is that it was found across from Plum Island, the infamous biological testing facility. It looks like a cross between a pig.. possibly a chicken? We can genetically modify animals to give birth to other animals, and cows to produce human milk, it wouldn't surprise me if it were a cross between two animals.
As far as the alien conspiracy... Interesting, but there wouldn't be research allowed in a place as obvious as that. If it really was some sort of hybrid, it would be under lock key, and several machine guns.

I'm pretty certain I heard someone identify it as a sloth or something, but I could be thinking of one of the other numerous bizarre dead animal bodies that popped up after this one.

The dead sloth was in South America. I forget the exact name of it, but it looked vaguely similar except for the elongated arms.
